How Close is Space?

At night staring at the night sky it feels like you can touch space and drift off into mysterious abyss.

But how close REALLY is space?

The simple answer is around 100 km (to put that into perspective that is around the length of the English Channel); however it isn’t actually a set distance as depending on where you are the altitude of the sky differs. This is due the irregular shape of the Earth as it is not 100% spherical.

Nevertheless, when sky gazing at night the magical feeling of touching the edge seems way closer than it really is, especially when only a few people have actually surpassed this distance.
