Betelgeuse – Was it About to Explode?

What is Betelgeuse?

Betelgeuse is a star in the milky way which is around 1000 times larger than the sun in our solar system and is a red supergiant nearing to the end of its life cycle. Due to the massive of this celestial body it will cause a supernova visible to the naked eye during the day and around the size of the moon. As it is relatively close to our Solar System – around 725 light years away – we will be able to see the supernova clearly. However, you can already see it. Betelgeuse at night is usually the tenth-brightest star and part of the Orion Constellation.

Was Betelgeuse About to Explode?

After observations of Betelgeuse unexpectedly becoming partially dimmed, astronomers believed that this was part of a pre-supernova event. However, thanks to researchers at Hubble, the dimming was more likely caused by a dust cloud formed by the hot materials released into space. This cloud blocked some of the light passing through from the surface. Although this is not a supernova, Betelgeuse is aging so watch sky because you may be the first to notice!

If a Supernova Happened Would it Affect ME?

The simple answer is no. However, you will see it in the sky and it will be incredibly bright so it likely damage your eyes if you stare at it.

What is a Supernova?

A supernova is a very large explosion which releases tonnes of light energy. They are extremely bright as the explosion is immense. Supernovas from single stars are caused when there is not enough nuclear fuel to continue fusing. Unable to withstand the gravitational force, the core of thee star collapses on itself.  This then creates a giant explosion.
